Original etching, c1740.
One of the series ultimately entitled Vari Capricci. With the etched signature in the plate.
Probably issued either 1743 or 1749.
The series was re-issued again in 1785 by Tiepolo’s son, when it was given the title Vari Capricci.

A good impression on unwatermarked laid paper. A little time-stained along the top edge.

Tiepolo’s capricci range in theme over fortune, divination, contemplation of death, the transience of time and the decay of past civilisations..

Penultimate trial proof, before the removal of a small rowing boat at the right,
and before the etched signature, title and date were added to the plate.
Signed in ink.  Annotated in pencil Trial VII and in the wider right margin Penzance (from the artist’s own collection).

Katherine Jowett, the Hata Men gate. This is an original colour woodcut.

KATHERINE JOWETT
Devon 1892 – 1972 Devon

The daughter of a Methodist minister, Timothy Wheatley, Katherine went to China following a Methodist missionary she intended to marry. She changed her mind, and married Hardy Jowett, a member of the British ex-patriot community in Peking. She painted, and made woodcuts, which she published herself and had quite a following in China in the 1920’s and 30’s. She was widowed in 1936 but remained in China, being interned by the Japanese during the Second World War. She returned to Oakhampton when the War was over.
