A
quotation from the etcher Wilfred Fairclough
describing monochrome prints provides a title
for this selection of new stock exclusively of
black and white prints, from the 16th to the
20th century.
As a graphic art printmaking finds its essential
expression in line and tone, colour per se is
extraneous.
Most
of the acknowledged greatest masters of printmaking
worked exclusively in black and white, as did a
host of minor masters. This catalogue, while it
includes several items by the likes of van Dyck,
Hollar, Piranesi, Goya, Turner, Constable and Whistler
has the emphasis on some less well-known
names.
