I have long contemplated and always dismissed a
catalogue dedicated to colour prints, realising
the impracticality of the project, and to
be fully representative in a way I would
have liked.
However,
as chance would have it, the selection of
prints for this catalogue includes a rather
larger percentage of colour items than is
usually the case, so I am taking the opportunity
to celebrate colour printmaking in a very
modest way, amidst a collection of otherwise
monochrome and ‘black and white’ impressions.
Though
colour prints are essentially etchings, engravings,
lithographs etc printed with inks of various
differently-coloured pigments, instead of or
in addition to the more usual black, some of
the techniques used to achieve them are quite
complex. The items offered here are presented
simply to be enjoyed as colour images. A description
of the different processes involved in achieving
colour prints, such as chiaroscuro
woodcut, colour
woodcut, colour etching, chromolithography,
four-colour methods such as pastel engraving etc, can all be found in the Techniques pages
of the website, under the relevant sections
whether relief, intaglio or planographic techniques.
