Additional
Information about the Print
The vase was purchased from the Fortezza pottery, near Knossos, on one of Jeff’s trips to Crete as archaeological draughtsman.
In
1994 Jeff made several pates that were variations
on this motif. (See the previous
item for the
aquatint.)
Soft-ground
etching employs a ground containing more grease
so that it does not set hard. A piece of paper
is laid over the grounded plate and the design
drawn on the paper in pencil or crayon.
The
pressure of the pencil lifts the ground, so that
acid will be able to bite through. The resulting
printed line is softer, retaining the character
of the originating pencil line, in comparison
with a hard ground etching which is closer to
a pen drawn line. |
