Information about the Print
In
1996 Jeff made a return trip to Dieppe, where
he stayed with a friend whose house commanded
views over the surrounding rooftops, which provided
the motif for several plates (see another example
in the Introduction).
Jeff’s previous visit was in 1954 (see the first
item in the exhibition), while a student of Cowern at Brighton. Cowern had taught retroussage, a wiping technique promoted by the Parisian printer Delâtre in the early days of the French etching revival, which adds drama by dragging ink against the edges of the intaglio lines, giving a velvety enhancement to the line similar to drypoint burr, in contrast to the sharp clear line resulting from a clean-wiping of the plate
