Information about the Print
One of Jeff’s earliest experiments using cardboard as a matrix instead of the more conventional metal (copper or zinc plate); an alternative form of ‘etching’ without using acid.
The
card was painted with yacht varnish, as
a ‘ground’. When
the varnish was dry, the motif was worked
into the ground with a drypoint needle. In reworking,
small additional pieces of shaped card were collaged
on top of the original design, notably over the
handkerchief and onion.
The
bottle and vase were reworked with heavy drypoint,
and carborundum powder applied with glue (the
word collograph is from the Greek kol (glue)
and graph (drawing)). Half tones were created
by rubbing with a wire brush and sandpaper.
The
card was then inked up as usual and printed on
the intaglio press. |
