Signed in pencil.
One of only two proofs in the first state, touched at a later date with ink and Chinese white preparatory to changing the plate for the second state, when it was transformed into a Satyr.
As such it was exhibited at the R.E. in 1896, with the title Satyr and Opus number 104.

Probably based on a life study done at the Slade.

(Holroyd exhibited an oil painting The Satyr King at the R.A. in 1889.)

Provenance: by descent from the artist to his widow Lady Holroyd; to their son Michael; to Michael’s godson.
