Information about the Print
Exhibited at the R.E. 1896.
Legros at the age of fifty-eight.
Holroyd had studied with Legros at The Slade 1881-1884 and after he had graduated, Legros invited him to stay on and assist him at the Slade. They remained good friends in later years.
In his 1894-95 etching Hayrick, Thorpe, the man sitting sketching in the shadow of the rick is Legros. Holroyd also etched a second portrait of Legros, three-quarter face looking left, in 1905.
Provenance: by descent from the artist to his widow Lady Holroyd; to their son Michael; to Michael’s godson.
