The circular mausoleum, on the Via Prenestina, in the Roman Campagna, was built as part of the 3rd century AD imperial villa of the Gordian family. The Tor dei Schiavi (Tower of Slaves, though the name derives from the dello Schiavo family, who built it over Roman remains in the 13th century) is seen at the far left.
Provenance: by descent from the artist to his widow Lady Holroyd; to their son Michael; to Michael’s godson.
