Information about the Print
“Sandgate
is a quiet suburb close to the sea where time
seems to slow down. On the eastern fringe of
a treelined walkway lies a small jetty which
leads one far enough from land to gaze at the
silhouetted islands and the distant flares of
refinery chimneys near the mouth of the Brisbane
River.
This
etching pays homage to British romantic pastoral
printmakers from William Blake to Samuel Palmer
to F L Griggs and Graham Sutherland.”
The
moonlight in the trees, though they be an Australian
species and not elms, bring to mind Palmer’s
childhood memory of shadows of branches cast
by the moon which gave him his ‘first
poetic impulse’.

introductory text to the Samuel
Palmer Legacy exhibition includes further
information about Ron
McBurnie.
