Le Antichità di Roma
The ultimately four volumes of 250 plates of Roman Antiquities began with eleven plates published in 1750 as Camera sepolcrali degli Antichi Romani le quale esistono dentro e fuori de Roma (ancient tombs in and around Rome) expanded in the following years and published in 1756 as Le Antichità di Roma.
Volumes II and III were devoted to the extensive remains of funerary monuments in and around Rome.
In recognition of the achievement of Le Antichità Romane Piranesi was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London.
(Piranesi’s son Francesco would publish a second (posthumous) edition in 1784.)
The title etched on a broken column beneath a frieze of figures, and other ancient fragments amidst an architectural setting.
