Honore Daumier, Monsieur Daumier, votre Serie est Charmante. This lithograph is for sale, priced £2000

HONORE DAUMIER
Marseilles 1808 – 1879 Valmondois

Monsieur Daumier, votre Série…est…Charmante…
Delteil 433 iii/iv

Plate 78 of the series Caricaturana (les Robert-Macaires)
229 x 225 mm (inner borderline); 336 x 256 mm (sheet)
Original lithograph, 1838.

Third state of four, with the lithographer’s nose elongated. The first published state, 1838, before the later alterations to the lettering. Published by Aubert, with period hand-colouring, sur blanc (separate issue to that in Le Charivari, on thicker paper and without text on the reverse). Occasional foxmarks and slight cockling.

Sold

An ostensible self-portrait of Daumier at work on the lithographic stone, in discussion with Charles Phillipon, editor and proprietor of the satirical daily newspaper
Le Charivari. Because of political press censorship Philipon and his contributing artists turned to mocking the ‘get rich quick’ mores of Paris under the government of Louis-Phillipe. Philipon suggested to Daumier the series of 100 lithographs Caricaturana, with the character of Robert-Macaire exploiting the populace in a variety of different roles and professions. Philipon composed the captions to the hugely successful series. Two thousand five hundred impressions ‘sur blanc’ are recorded, but despite this high number they are found infrequently and Plate 78 is particularly rare.

Whistler as I Knew Him by Mortimer Menpes. This monograph with original etching is for sale

James Abbott McNeill Whistler, The menepes Children. This original etching, contained within the monograph by Mortimer Menepes, is for sale

WHISTLER AS I KNEW HIM
The monograph by Mortimer Menpes, published 1904.

The de-luxe issue, edition of 500, containing an impression of the original Whistler etching of

The Menpes Children
Kennedy 261

67 x 100 mm (plate); 265 x 200 mm (sheet)

Original etching, c1884-86. The plate signed with Whistler’s butterfly ‘monogram’.

Printed, by Menpes, in brown ink on antique watermarked laid paper, bound into the book.

The book binding no longer perfect. The etching in good clean condition, a little cockled as usual because of the thinness of the paper.

The Australian artist settled in England. As a student at South Kensington he met Whistler in  November 1880. He offered to help print Whistler’s Venice Set of etchings, and they became close friends until the late 1880’s.
The book is the main source of information about Whistler’s copper plate printing technique after his return from Venice.

Foujita settled in France in 1913. He quickly became part of the artistic circle in Montmartre  around Picasso, Apollinaire &c. After the First World War he became a leading figure in the group of émigré painters who made up the Ecole de Paris. In the 1920’s he made a number of self-portraits, usually accompanied by his tabby cat.
The cat appears looking over his shoulder in a whole series of variations on the theme, with a pleasing juxtaposition of their two faces.
