x 100 mm (plate); 265 x 200 mm (sheet)
Original
etching, c1884-86. The plate signed with
Whistler’s butterfly ‘monogram’.
Printed,
by Menpes, in brown ink on antique watermarked
laid paper, bound into the book.
The
book binding no longer perfect. The etching
in good clean condition, a little cockled
as usual because of the thinness of the paper.
The
Australian artist settled in England. As
a student at South Kensington he met Whistler
in November 1880. He offered to help
print Whistler’s Venice Set of
etchings, and they became close friends until
the late 1880’s.
The book is the main source of information
about Whistler’s copper plate printing
technique after his return from Venice.
