A trial proof in the first state.
Signed in pencil and annotated.
On cream wove paper with narrow margins.

Also two impressions in the third (final) state, after the plate was cut down and bevelled, printed with plate tone, one in brown ink and one in black, on cream laid paper watermarked O.W.P&A.C.L.

Both signed in pencil, and annotated at the foot of the sheets.

Additional Information about the Print

Exhibited at the R.E. 1900.

The etching shows the subject of the central panel of the tryptic Holroyd painted for the main altar of St Michael’s Church at Aveley in Essex.

The wings have paintings of St Michael and St Gabriel. In 1958 Holroyd’s altar was moved to the North Chapel and a new main High Altar installed. He also designed a stained glass window for the church showing the Resurrection.

Provenance: by descent from the artist to his widow Lady Holroyd; to their son Michael; to Michael’s godson.
