Etching, 1928. First published state, issued in 1928. Signed in pencil, dated and numbered XVI from the edition of 50. (There was a second edition, of 12, from the reworked plate in 1984.) Entitled in pencil in the lower margin. Printed by David Strang on cream Whatman laid paper. Published by John Nicholson. The remains of an old exhibition label on the reverse in the top left corner of the sheet.

Additional Information about the Print

The second plate of the abandoned proposed series of Wiltshire country labours.

The landscape derives from Weavern and Slaughterford, where Tanner used to watch a hedger at work. The church owes something to Colerne.
