Impressions in the first state and the second state, when the pen is switched to the sitter’s right hand. (Dodgson does not distinguish these two states, describing only two states in all: one before and one after the addition of two ruled lines beneath the subject.)
The 1st state on more of the same ledger antique paper as Lady Godiva, the 2nd state on thin laid paper.
Both with narrow margins and foxing

Additional Information about the Print

Chambers (1866 -1954) in his study at home, doubtless writing on the English medieval and early Renaissance theatre, his passion from University days. A few years after this portrait, he was involved with founding the scholastic theatrical Malone Society and served as its first president 1906 to 1939.

Exhibited at the R.E. 1901.

Provenance: by descent from the artist to his widow Lady Holroyd; to their son Michael; to Michael’s godson.
